The top 5 reasons riders are choosing electric motorcycles

Electric motorcycles are relatively new; and much like their four-wheeled counterparts, technology and adoption is quickly evolving thanks to a unique set of advantages over their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. Let’s take a look at some of these advantages and explore how a LiveWire Electric Motorcycle might be right for your next bike.

5. performance

In 2020, professional racer Angelle Sampset on a LiveWire One set the world record for fastest electric motorcycle at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, with an official 1/8th mile time of 7.017 seconds and 1/4-mile time of 11.156 seconds.

The LiveWire One and S2 Del Mar both share a blistering 0 - 60 MPH in just 3 seconds flat, while the S2 Mulholland is just behind at 3.3 seconds. This makes the LiveWire bikes quicker off the line than a brand-new Porsche 911 Carrera.

All LiveWire models offer four preset riding modes that change the performance and handling of the bike: Sport, Road, Range and Rain. Each mode features a different percentage level of power, throttle response, traction control and regenerative braking. You can also create your own custom modes that allow you to set the percentages to your preferred riding style.

4. Cost of Ownership

Although the initial purchase price of a LiveWire Electric Motorcycle is above some of its comparable ICE counterparts, it is important to take in consideration the cost of ownership, including fuel and maintenance. With fewer moving parts, LiveWire Electric Motorcycles have minimal upkeep making them much more affordable to maintain compared to a traditional ICE bike. No more worrying about tuning or adjustments, spark plugs, air filters, fueling, and transmission issues – just twist the throttle and go. Many jurisdictions also offer tax credits and incentives for electric motorcycles, making them more affordable than ever.

3. EV Charging and Range

Lets start off by saying that EV Motorcycles technology in its current state is not meant to be a replacement for their ICE counterparts. Sure, EVs can be made to go for “the long haul” with planning but we find they really shine with bringing excitement to your commutes and everyday rides. With the ever increasing prevalence of EV charging infrastructure around the world, we will see increasing range and feasibility in more and more regions.

All LiveWire models come with a basic Level 1 Charging cable that allows you to charge the bike on a standard 110v US wall outlet. A Level 1 charge will provide approximately 13 miles of range per hour and is best suited for overnight charging as it can take several hours to complete. The S2 Platform is also compatible with Level 2 (220v) Charging and will charge 20-80% in 78 minutes, while the LiveWire ONE is one of the few EV motorcycles that accepts a Level 3 DC Fast Charge, and will charge 0-80% in 40 minutes, or 0-100% in just one hour

The S2 Platform has a city range of about 110 miles, while The LiveWire ONE will go up to 146 miles on a single charge which most people will find more than sufficient for their day to day use. Like their ICE counterparts, EV range is dependent on the rider input, speed, and riding conditions.

2. sustainability

All LiveWire electric motorcycles, are considered zero emission vehicles, as they do not produce exhaust or tailpipe emissions. While there is still a carbon footprint associated with LiveWire bikes – mostly due to material production and manufacturing – the environmental impact of electric vehicles is still significantly less than the production and lifetime use of an internal combustion engine (ICE). As technology and infrastructure evolve, and electricity grids become cleaner, the carbon impact of EVs will continue to trend in an overwhelmingly positive direction.

Introduced with the S2 Mulholland is LiveWire’s first use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials across key touch points on the bike including bodywork, seat, and secondary plastic components.

Mulholland’s front and rear fenders are manufactured using CAP Hemp bio-composite. The motorcycle's radiator shrouds, and wiring caddies are manufactured from HYLON® OCEAN (PCR Nylon 6), the origin of which are discarded ocean fishing nets, further reducing the reliance on petroleum-based plastics. LiveWire also manufactured the seat using petroleum-free, recyclable silicone rather than leather or vinyl.

Finally, the bike will be available in an eco-friendlier unpainted Lunar White finish that elevates the CAP Hemp material while minimizing the use of traditional plastics and paints—efforts unseen in this category prior to the launch of Mulholland. Liquid Black will be the sole painted option available.

1. safety and approachability

LiveWire EV motorcycles are equipped with advanced safety systems backed by innovative technology, including cornering-enhanced anti-lock braking (ABS), drag torque slip control system (CSCS) and cornering-enhanced traction control (C-TCS). While the battery has functionally designed fins for optimized airflow, the On-Board Charger (OBC) and motor are liquid cooled. Since there is no exhaust, the LiveWire will not put off any heat, making it an ideal bike for commuting or weekend fun, even in the hottest of summer months. The LiveWire is also fully automatic direct drive, which means you don’t have to worry about using a clutch. It is a great bike for those new to motorcycling, or for those looking for an easier, more enjoyable ride.

Whether it’s adrenaline rush of an EV motor, the ease of operation and low maintenance, or just the thrill of every throttle twist, there are many advantages to electric motorcycles, and plenty of reasons why riders are making the switch to the quiet side.
