A More Sustainable Future is Truly Electric

All true EVs, including LiveWire electric motorcycles, are considered zero emission vehicles, as they do not produce exhaust or tailpipe emissions. While there is still a carbon footprint associated with LiveWire bikes – mostly due to material production and manufacturing – the environmental impact of electric vehicles is still significantly less than the production and lifetime use of an internal combustion engine (ICE). As technology and infrastructure evolve, and electricity grids become cleaner, the carbon impact of EVs will continue to trend in an overwhelmingly positive direction.

Looking Ahead

While LiveWire already designs with the future in mind, as a company, we’ve committed to an ambitious goal of being carbon net-zero by 2035. As a step beyond carbon-neutral, in which any carbon emissions are offset, net-zero is the abatement of any emissions throughout the lifetime of a product. This is accomplished through increases in operational and production efficiencies, utilizing renewable resources and electrification, and other “green” means. At LiveWire, we are intentional in exploring how to integrate sustainability into our ideation, product design, and manufacturing, including the use of more plant-based, recycled, and renewable materials for future motorcycle models.

Sustainable Bodywork on s2 mulholland

Introduced with the S2 Mulholland is LiveWire’s first use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials across key touch points on the bike including bodywork, seat, and secondary plastic components.

Mulholland’s front and rear fenders are manufactured using CAP Hemp bio-composite. The motorcycle's radiator shrouds, and wiring caddies are manufactured from HYLON® OCEAN (PCR Nylon 6), the origin of which are discarded ocean fishing nets, further reducing the reliance on petroleum-based plastics. LiveWire also manufactured the seat using petroleum-free, recyclable silicone rather than leather or vinyl.

Finally, the bike will be available in an eco-friendlier unpainted Lunar White finish that elevates the CAP Hemp material while minimizing the use of traditional plastics and paints—efforts unseen in this category prior to the launch of Mulholland. Liquid Black will be the sole painted option available.

Sustainable Bodywork on LiveWire ONE

Silent Dancer, the custom LiveWire ONE designed by Dr. Woo in partnership with Suicide Machine Co, is comprised of organic flax fiber bodywork called AmpliTex™, which has roots in motorsports like Formula 1 and German Touring Cars Masters (DTM). With comparable weight and the stiffness of carbon fiber, it is much more sustainably produced with an 85% lower carbon footprint and features higher vibration dampening and fatigue resistance. BComp, the Swiss manufacturer of AmpliTex™, has been making strides toward cleaner mobility in motorsports through their award-winning flax fibers. Their materials are harvested and produced using methods that minimize environmental impact and waste, while operating with UN Sustainable Development Goals in mind. Using this innovative and earth-friendly flax fiber, our SMCO friends, Aaron and Shaun Guardado, fabricated the custom body pieces in their workshop, located in Long Beach, CA.

Keep an eye on LiveWire as we continue to push electric motorcycle boundaries through both technology advances and sustainability initiatives.

Lunar White Raw Material

The all-new S2 Mulholland’s Lunar White colorway features sustainable and eco-friendly CAP hemp bio-composite on its front and rear fender. This raw material is called Renovar and is manufactured using hemp-filled cellulosic-based resin that was innovated by C2 Renew in Fargo, ND. Diverse in appearance, this material reduces carbon emissions with resin from sustainably managed forests making over 40% of this composite renewable. This cuts back on the use of traditional plastics while the low processing temperatures not only save energy, but also preserve natural colors and strength within the material. Further reducing the reliance on petroleum-based plastics, the seats are manufactured using petroleum-free, recyclable silicone rather than leather or vinyl while the radiator shrouds, and the wiring caddies are manufactured from HYLON® OCEAN (PCR Nylon 6), the origin of which are discarded ocean fishing nets.
